Club History
Roadracing has been present in the Carrick-on-suir area since the early Seventies. The first races were held on a circuit around the village of Rathgormac. They were organized by the "Blackchurch Racing Association", a Dublin based group of motorcycle enthusiasts who enjoyed the vast amount of work involved in running such an event.
In 1976 the races were moved to a 2.3 mile circuit near Faugheen. The event transformed the quiet village of Faugheen and the surrounding areas with its Castrol fuelled atmosphere, the likes of which had never before been seen in that part of South Tipp.
Some of the biggest names of the era came to race at the "Faugheen 50" and loved it. So much so, that each year they returned, in their masses, from North and South to race at the fast and challenging circuit…rushing past the straw bales, ditches and crowds of enthusiastic spectators. Names like Sam McClemments, Davy Woods, Jim Dunlop, Robert Dunlop and Eddie Laycock to name but a few. Sadly, this great era came to an end with the chequered flag of the last race in 1986. The cost of running the event proved too much for the limited resourses of the "Blackchurch Racing Association", and so was cast into the annals of time.
So to the present.....
In October 2001 a couple of motorcycle enthusiasts decided to look into the possibility of reviving the event, feeling that it would bring something positive back to the area. One thing led to another and on 20th of January the first meeting of the "Faugheen 50 Supporters Club Ltd." took place in a garage in Ballinacrunney. About 20 people turned up, so the dream really took hold. The "Faugheen 50 Supporters Club Ltd." now has over 50 full members and many more associate members whose prime intention is to see Roadracing back in Faugheen in 2003!
Roadracing has been gaining in popularity, with new events being added every year.At present there are six road race events in the South and a new championship which promises to be hotly contested by all the top riders. Thousands of spectators travel from far and wide to follow their heroes in the real home of Roadracing. Racing is fast and furious, close enough to touch, close enough to smell the hot engines as they scream past the hedges and trees, on roads that play host to tractors every other weekend. It is no surprise that it has such a big following. With TV coverage a real possibility for the southern races this year, it will really bring this enthralling sport to the masses.
Spectators and riders are also much safer than in the past with the establishment of a Task Force to deal with safety issues at all events. Not a wheel turns without everything being checked and checked again.
Everyone will benefit from the return of Roadracing to the South East. The immediate area will reap the rewards from accommodating and feeding the masses. Publicans will have to quench the mighty thirst that can build up after watching a day's furious racing. All local services will have something to look forward to. The beauty of the area will ensure that people will return again to sample the hospitality. The whole area can only benefit.
